The company Publish America is a “MAJOR” book publishing company on the East Coast. For those of you who have not heard of them they are an online publisher that seek out NEW authors to exploit their work and make money off of them while they swindle the author. They make promises to the author which are not carried out or true at all. The one promise that is carried out is they do publish your work without you having to pay them. In fact they send you a check for $1 to seal the contract once you sign and send it to them.

It is an exciting adventure for those of us who dream of making it BIG as published authors. The sad thing is most of those promises they use to entice you to sign with them are only carried out when you get that first email offering you the opportunity to have your book in an expo or on a televised show of some kind. I have even gotten emails stating they will send my books to Tom Hanks or Oprah. It all sounds great except for they ask that you purchase copies of your book at a set price to “Activate” the deal.

Now let’s be honest here. If you have access to getting books you published to Oprah, Tom Hanks or any other celebrity out there then it would be profitable for you to do so whether the author wants the deal or not. It’s just how they make their money. I have made the mistake of publishing two books through them and though many of my friends I met through Publish America have taken a deal to purchase their rights back for their books that they wrote I refuse to do something like that.

Publish America is a dirty company that authors need to know about. Several authors have attempted to exploit them and prove that they publish anyone’s work which is just bad business for the book industry. They do not edit your work unless you pay them to do so. They publish your work “As Is.” I recently met a young man who published through Publish America. He also is attempting to show the world how dirty this company is.

Publish America did NOT bother to check this young man’s credentials and signed him as an author illegally. This young man is only 16 years old and they expect to hold a legally binding contract over his head when it was in fact not legally binding due to his age. This young author wishes to tell his story.

Daric Richie- “I joined Publish America in August 2009, after I (as a hobby) had joined the ISP convention in Las Vegas. I had learned of this company (Publish America) from one of the judges, who thought my work would be suitable for little publication.

I was weary at first, because I had never really heard of Publish America at all. Literally I think I had probably heard their name once or twice, and neither of the time were all that great. When I joined Publish America; I felt like I had just been sucked into a time warp everything went so fast.

Almost immediately my manuscript (Scientific Rivalry) was accepted for publication and rushed off for production. I had been given several different things to sign, per the usual. Before my "Scientific Rivalry" was actually published, I noticed that Publish America didn't do any of the editing they promised to do.

(I purposely left out a letter in Scientific) to see if they'd edit it. And they didn't, they threw it out for distribution and never worried about that title again. About a month into having SR published, I had begun being approached my several members of my family asking if "I liked being an author" "If the money was good"...

Stumbled... I finally began asking "What money?" "I haven't sold any books yet". Little did I know I actually did, and Publish America never paid up the royalties for them. At first I left it alone, because I thought "Hey they probably are waiting until book #2 comes out then will pay up"..

My second book "A Vampires Love Story" was published in April 2010, and the same thing occurred. I was never paid any royalties for my second or first book, nor was my book ever kept up for sale.

I soon began asking Publish America questions.. like "Where are my royalties for the books I've sold"....? It got to the point, that I had asked repeatedly that Miranda Prather herself marked my books unavailable for further distribution, and any further projects submitted will not be released to the public....

(I didn't find this out until about 2 weeks ago). Funny huh? They didn't tell me that piece of information for over a year. Then, in November 2010 Publish America did the unthinkable. They violated my privacy, by giving out my personal information, my birth name, and place of residence.

(I had initially signed up as an author under a meme and kept my real name absolutely hidden). A woman requesting not to be named in this article phoned Publish America and literally was given all the information she asked for.... THEN.... took the information to Youtube putting it wherever she could dubbing me a "Pedophile" because Publish America gave away my personal information.).

(Note: I am actually a minor; Publish America bought into the trap. They signed a (then 14 year old me) without verifying any information they were given. They gave out my personal information (The information I had submitted, that they had thought was mine) to a complete stranger.

Not even 3 days ago; (After the whole privacy thing unraveled) I recieved an email from Publish America worker Raymond... who threatened to sue me for exposing what Publish America really was.

Because of my exposing Publish America for the violation they committed, and the lies they told me, broken promises, etc, etc. They denied my request to be pulled from Publish America completely, (Note that as of 4 days ago Raymond of PA knows that I am a minor; and denied my request to be pulled from the company. Says I have no right to withdrawal from the company, and have no choice but to live out the next four something years under Publish America's belt), which I didn't. As of tonight (11:30PM PST) Scientific Rivalry is being re-published and re-sold under my own name. I told Publish America with or without them I will continue my work as an author, despite them trying to cover themselves for what they've done.”
