House of Fraser - A Top Class Department Store
Author: Eva Brooks
The company’s humble beginning was a drapery shop on the corner of Argyle St and Buchanan St, Glasgow under the name of Arthur and Fraser.
Hugh Fraser was an apprentice in Stuart and McDonald Ltd drapery warehouse in Glasgow and became a manager.
James Arthur owned a retail drapery business in Paisley near Glasgow. He expanded his business and turned into a wholesale trade at the Argyle St. In 1856 they moved to Miller St for bigger premises and traded as Arthur & Co.
During the 1850 and 1860 a professional manager Thomas Kilpatrick and then Alexander McLaren took over. In 1865 the partnership was dissolved and Hugh Fraser took over the retail while James Arthur dealt with the whole sale business.
Hugh Fraser died in 1873 and his three sons took over named it Fraser & Sons.
1879 the famous flagship store in Oxford Street, London was opened by Dan Harris Evans. He was 23 years old and from Wales. He opened his own store in Western Bridge Road called D H Evans which traded till 2001 and then bought by the House of Fraser.
1900 Hugh Fraser II introduced the emblem of a stag head and expanded the company. He died in 1927.
Hugh Fraser III took over, expanded the business further and in 1948 named the Company House of Fraser. He sold the properties to insurance companies and leased it back which created capital. He used the capital to modernise existing stores and bought other stores including Harrods.
In 1985 Al Fayed bought the company for £615million and later sold it but kept Harrods.
During the 2000 the House of Fraser experienced turbulent years with buying and selling and closing stores down.
